Holiday Archetypes: Which One Are You?
(& What Can It Teach You?)
By Marc Gilson
Holidays can bring out our best - and occasionally our not-so-good - character traits. They seem to have a way of amplifying who we are, or at least how we approach this time of year. And what they reveal about ourselves can be enlightening!
Whether you’re the one frantically stringing up lights, organizing family potlucks, or sneaking a quiet moment with some eggnog and your favorite holiday movie, your approach to the season often says a lot about you. And it offers valuable reminders on how to maintain a healthy balance when the holidays are in full swing.
So this year, let’s dive into the world of Holiday Archetypes - the personalities and roles we embody during this festive time. I think you’ll find that identifying your archetype isn’t just fun; it’s also a chance to reflect on what drives you and how you can find more joy and connection this season.
Which holiday archetype do you relate to the most? Let’s find out!
10 Holiday Archetypes
1. The Giver
Traits: Generous, thoughtful, and always on the hunt for the perfect gift. The Giver loves seeing others light up with joy and often goes above and beyond to make it happen.
Lesson: Remember that your presence is often the best present. Take care of yourself so you can give without depleting your energy.
2. The Perfectionist
Traits: Obsessed with every detail, from the ideal centerpiece to the perfectly golden turkey. You thrive on creating a flawless holiday experience.
Lesson: Life’s most beautiful moments are often imperfect. Let go of the pressure to get everything “just right” and savor the messy, magical parts of the season.
3. The Social Butterfly
Traits: Every invitation is a "yes" for you! You love the excitement of parties, gatherings, and connecting with as many people as possible.
Lesson: Give yourself permission to skip a few events. Quiet moments can be just as fulfilling as the buzz of a room full of friends.
4. The Nostalgic
Traits: Tradition is everything for you. Whether it’s a favorite holiday movie, a decades-old family recipe, or a cherished ornament, you find comfort in the familiar.
Lesson: Be open to creating new memories and traditions while honoring the old. The holidays can evolve in meaningful ways.
5. The Planner
Traits: Your calendar is color-coded, and every holiday detail is mapped out weeks in advance. You’re the one coordinating travel, meals, and schedules.
Lesson: Relax! Not everything needs a plan. Lean into spontaneity to let the season surprise you in delightful ways.
6. The Minimalist
Traits: You value simplicity, keeping decorations, gifts, and commitments to a minimum. Less really is more for you during the holidays.
Lesson: While simplicity is beautiful, don’t shy away from indulging in a little festive flair. Let yourself be swept up in the joy of the season now and then.
7. The Magic Maker
Traits: Focused on creating wonder for everyone around you, especially kids or loved ones. You thrive on seeing others light up.
Lesson: Don’t forget to let yourself experience the magic, too. Take a step back and savor the joy you’ve worked so hard to create.
8. The Grinch
Traits: Overwhelmed by crowds, commercialization, or family drama, you’d rather sit this one out. Who needs it??
Lesson: The holidays don’t have to look a certain way. Focus on what brings you joy, even if it’s as simple as a quiet day at home.
9. The Over-Indulger
Traits: From food to shopping to holiday movies, you dive headfirst into everything the season offers. More is always better for you.
Lesson: Enjoy the abundance but practice moderation. No need to go overboard. A little mindful moderation ensures you savor every moment without regret.
10. The Peacekeeper
Traits: You’re the glue that holds everyone together. You smooth over conflicts and prioritize harmony in every gathering.
Lesson: Don’t take on the weight of everyone else’s emotions. Prioritize your own peace, too—it’s okay to step back when you need to.

This Really Happened
Day 4. Today was different. I went to the office. I knew I should've worked from home. I immediately felt stressed. I could feel my body started to stiffen and tighten up. My day was spiraling until I saw the Day 4 email in my inbox. I got my headset and tuned everyone out. It was a beautiful experience. I felt more at peace and was very calm. I breezed through the rest of my work day and almost ran out the door when it was time to go home. I felt like I wanted to be out in nature.
