But after hearing first-hand some of the stories that my friends shared with me about how light therapy changed their lives…

How to Harness the Power of Light Therapy

In fact, people have been enjoying the benefits of “light therapy” for thousands of years, with historical accounts of sunbathing for health and well-being dating back to ancient times.
But light therapy is far from an outdated relic.
Thanks to advances in laser technology, the scientific community has been abuzz with study after study on the whole light spectrum, unearthing new evidence to support all sorts of new light-based therapies.
From overcoming depression to promoting cellular healing, different light waves hold huge potential to promote healing and personal peace.

Here are a few of the most popular and powerful forms of light therapy and their benefits:
1. Red Light Therapy
Also known as low-level laser therapy or “cold-laser” therapy, red light therapy utilizes low-intensity red light wavelengths to penetrate the skin and promote cellular healing. It is said to improve skin complexion, reduce signs of aging, promote wound healing, and even alleviate pain and inflammation in conditions such as arthritis and tendonitis.
2. Infrared Light Therapy
Infrared light therapy uses invisible, yet deeply penetrating, wavelengths of light to increase blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and soothe pain. It is particularly beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain or sports-related injuries, as it can help speed up the healing process and provide relief.
3. Violet Light Therapy
Violet light therapy has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It’s especially useful for treating acne, as it can effectively kill the bacteria responsible for causing breakouts while also reducing inflammation in the affected area. It’s also shown to have mood-enhancing properties, thanks to its calming and soothing effect on the nervous system. Research shows it also alleviates stress and anxiety, promotes relaxation, and even increases spiritual awareness.
4. Bright White Light Therapy
This form of light therapy is the most common and well-studied. It employs the use of bright white light, mimicking natural sunlight, to alleviate symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), non-seasonal depression, and sleep disorders. By exposing yourself to this bright light for a set period each day, you can experience an uplift in mood, energy, and overall well-being.
3 Tips to Use Light Therapy
So, how can you start getting the benefits of light therapy? Here are three tips that make it easy to add some light to your daily routine:
Tip 1: Rise and Shine with the Morning Light
The early morning hours, when the sun casts its gentle glow upon the world, is an opportune time to harness the benefits of light therapy. Try to wake up with the sun, allowing the natural light to seep into your room and envelop your body. This act alone can help regulate your circadian rhythm and boost your energy levels.
If you're unable to align your waking hours with the sun, fear not! Light therapy lamps, designed to simulate natural sunlight, offer a suitable alternative. One study revealed that exposure to a bright light therapy lamp for 30 minutes each morning significantly improved the mood of those with non-seasonal depression.
Tip 2: Soak in the Sun, Mindfully
There's a certain healing quality to the warm embrace of sunlight. When you're out and about during the day, take a moment to close your eyes and face the sun. Feel the warmth on your skin and take a few deep, mindful breaths. This simple act of sun-soaking not only boosts your mood but also provides a much-needed dose of vitamin D.
Remember, though, to practice sun-safety. Moderation is key, as excessive sun exposure can lead to sunburn and other skin issues. And don't forget your sunscreen!
