What Costs $3.12, Is Already in Your Kitchen Cabinet
& Will Improve Your Health?

By MaryEllen Tribby

I’m a big believer in turning lemons into lemonade. Yes, I know that might sound trite but if you give me a few minutes to explain, I promise, you will be glad you did.

You see, recently I went through a series of dental surgeries that started with the pulling of 18 teeth at once - yes I said 18 teeth in one sitting! This was followed by a series of procedures that included being fitted for new teeth, bone and gum trimming, expanding implants and more.

There was a lot of second-guessing my decision about starting this process. Not to mention a lot of tears.

From start to finish, this painful endeavor took over 5 months!

Needless to say, during this time my diet and eating habits needed to adjust. All of a sudden things like whole wheat avocado toast were off the table (no pun intended ;-))

After a couple of weeks of nothing but juice and mashed potatoes, I started experimenting with different ingredients - especially spices.

I knew I needed to incorporate more veggies into my diet, so protein smoothies became a daily staple. And in order to mask the taste of spinach and broccoli, I added a healthy dose of cinnamon to my smoothies…

…which helped the flavor a lot!

Soon I found myself adding this tasty spice to almost all the foods I was eating, from oatmeal to pancakes (mushy ones).

At my next procedure, my oral surgeon commented on how incredibly fast my mouth was healing. When I shared my recent obsession with cinnamon he informed me that cinnamon did wonders for preventing infections and encouraged me to keep it up.

It was around this time that I also noticed my skin was looking really good and the arthritis in my knees and back was feeling better.

Of course this prompted me to do some research on the health benefits of cinnamon and boy-oh-boy, what I found out is pretty powerful stuff.

So much so, I wanted to share my lemonade with you!

10 Impressive Health Benefits of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a versatile spice that has been used in culinary and medicinal applications for centuries. Derived from the inner bark of several species of trees in the genus Cinnamomum, cinnamon has been used for everything from spicing up desserts to treating ailments. In recent years, research has uncovered several health benefits of cinnamon, making it an increasingly popular ingredient in kitchens around the world.

Here are ten of the best health benefits of cinnamon:

  1. Anti-inflammatory properties: Cinnamon contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds help reduce inflammation in the body and can be beneficial in treating conditions such as arthritis.
  2. Lower blood sugar levels: Cinnamon has been found to lower blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. This can be particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes.
  3. Improve heart health: Cinnamon has been shown to reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, which are risk factors for heart disease. Additionally, cinnamon can help reduce blood pressure, which is another risk factor for heart disease.
  4. Anti-microbial properties: Cinnamon has natural anti-microbial properties, which means it can help fight off infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This can be particularly beneficial in treating oral infections such as cavities and gum disease.
  5. Improve brain function: Cinnamon has been found to improve brain function in several ways. It can help improve memory and attention span, and may even help delay the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
  6. Anti-cancer properties: Some studies have suggested that cinnamon may have anti-cancer properties. These studies have shown that cinnamon can help reduce the growth of cancer cells and may even induce cancer cell death.
  7. Improve digestion: Cinnamon can help improve digestion by reducing inflammation in the gut and stimulating the production of digestive enzymes. This can help alleviate symptoms of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease.
  8. Boost immunity: Cinnamon contains compounds that can help boost the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells. This can help the body fight off infections and diseases.
  9. Relieve menstrual cramps: Cinnamon has been found to have a pain-relieving effect and may help alleviate menstrual cramps. This is thought to be due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
  10. Improve skin health: Cinnamon can also improve skin health by promoting circulation and reducing inflammation. It can be particularly beneficial in treating acne and other skin conditions.

How to Add Cinnamon to Your Diet

There are a ton of ways to incorporate cinnamon into your diet all day long. Here are some great ideas to get you started.

Breakfast / Dessert

Breakfast might be one of the easier meals that can be spiced up with some cinnamon. You can add a sprinkle to your morning oatmeal, yogurt, breakfast cereal, pancakes, muffins, or even toast. If you drink a smoothie in the morning a good dollop of cinnamon will alleviate the more bitter flavors that tend to come with healthier ingredients. You can even add it to your morning cup of coffee by sprinkling some into the coffee grinds before you brew.

Cinnamon also lends itself well to sweets like ice cream, baked pastries, and other desserts.

Lunch / Dinner

Cinnamon tastes great in an afternoon tea that you can sip alongside any meal. For a burst of flavor, it also goes surprisingly well with savory dishes such as soups, stews, curries and stir-fries.

In fact, after speaking to my sister about the miracles of cinnamon, she reminded me that my grandmother would always add cinnamon to her spaghetti sauce!

While it may sound strange, the cinnamon added a warm and comforting flavor to the sauce that we all grew to love. So next time you're making spaghetti sauce, don't be afraid to add a sprinkle of cinnamon for a unique twist.

Other Healthy Ways to Use Cinnamon

To get the most out of using cinnamon for oral health, try adding a few drops of cinnamon oil to your toothpaste or mouthwash. Some people find they prefer cinnamon flavor to mint.

You can even incorporate cinnamon into your skincare routine by making a DIY face mask! Just mix cinnamon powder with honey and apply it to your face. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and enjoy beautiful, radiant skin!
